B-School – Pre-launch thoughts

B-School 2014 - Pre-launch thoughts // erineflynn.com

So, I’m doing Marie Forleo’s B-School again this year. Last year I had access to the materials, but not the community, so this year I wanted access to everything. I figured I’d maybe blog every week or two about how I’m following along and my thoughts. Maybe that way I’ll actually make the time to do it, unlike last year when I drug it on forever.

And wow! The B-School community is HUGE.

And it’s really overwhelming.

But my inbox is blowing up with inquiries!

So I’m trying to use the community strategically, and not just get lost in it for hours and hours–which is easy to do. There’s a HUGE Facebook group, a ton of subgroups, LinkedIn, etc. etc.

Every time I login to Facebook I have at least 20 notifications. And I’m logging in several times a day! And yes, I turned notifications off for the groups, I just get them when people are talking to me or replying to something I replied to. It’s insane.

And maybe I just don’t get it, but there are people posting all the time about things that aren’t related to business at all. I’ve seen posts about all sorts of crazy things that I won’t mention as not to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I really just don’t get the completely random topics in these groups.

So my strategy is going to be to check Facebook 3x a day, and try to be helpful, make connections with people who offer complimentary services, and not get lost in a rabbit hole of craziness that doesn’t lead to anything. I mean, it’s fun to play around all day and talk to people, but I gotta work!

Speaking of work, I’ve been working like crazy lately. Which is great, but I’m even dreaming about work, and that’s never good no matter how much you like your job. This round through B-School I’m working on re-structuring my business in a way that helps me make money more passively. I know I’ve been talking about that for a while, but I’m really making the effort to transition now. Like, really, really.

Part of that means really focusing less on selling designs (which I’ve done very few of recently anyhow) and stepping up on courses, coding, consultations, website maintenance, and webinars.

Yup, I’m gonna be offering webinars! So many people who have taken my classes email me and want to know more, so I figure this is a great way to do group question sessions, classes, and eventually a more interactive course with a small group. If you have a webinar or class topic request, feel free to let me know in the comments!

I’m excited for this round of B-School and this next transition in my business that will hopefully allow me a little more freedom! I can tell you right now that my web design packages will be getting another price bump after B-School, and it may be pretty close to your last chance to get a website designed by me, so (here’s the sales pitch!) hop on over to my contact page and book your website or blog design!

Are you taking B-School? Are you as overwhelmed by the community as I am?

I’ve never done B-School but I’ve heard the community is huge & full on! it must be hard to find a way to make it work well for you. Kind of sounds like the main group isn’t all that structured if people are posting about other things.
But I also feel kind of stupid right now, I realise the value in the B-School network but never thought about that transferring into inquiries or sales from other people in the course. A really obvious connect I had never thought of.

Yeah, the subgroups are fine, but the main group doesn’t seem structured at all. A lot of people seem to be using it to make friends, which is great, I just don’t have the luxury of time to chat about completely random stuff at the moment. I guess that’s fine, it’s just not what I was expecting!

TBH, I don’t think I’d have shelled out the money for B-School without the community–it’s full of all sorts of ladies I’d love to work with–even despite the craziness of the main group. :)

As a late registrant, I’m overwhelmed, but moreso about the concept of B-School and the progression through the courses. I say this because, as a late registrant, I also have not been given access to the community as of yet, but have been assured this will happen prior to the first session, so I haven’t been able to really get the community vibe as of yet – I’ll let you know where I stand when I do :P

In any event, I think it will be huge for my business as I’m just starting out on my own – so I’m super excited! We’ll see where it takes me :)

I’m super curious about B-School due to the mad crazy great marketing skillz that Marie Forleo has (that woman could probably sell me shit on a stick and I’d want to buy it…) but considering that I’m not really running a business at the moment, seemed kinda silly for me to be jumping in with that.

That said, I think more passive incomes are the way to go… and well written educational materials are worth their weight in gold. Do it, to it, sistah!

    • says

Yeah, Marie is a master at marketing, there is no disputing that. TBH I’m hoping some of her marketing skills are contagious! I can’t sell my way out of a paper bag.

I totally agree. The community is definitely overwhelming! I’ve heard that the community is probably one of the best parts, and I can see why (feedback!), but at the same time I wonder how people are actually making connections. There are so many people and so many names, I’m not going to remember who I spoke with. But it’s only been 2 days, so we’ll see!

    • says

Yeah, I’m worried that people who made great connections in the community made them back when it was smaller–it moves so quickly now that I just don’t know how you’d get known by many people unless you just commented all day every day on every topic. That has me worried.

But then again, I have gotten several inquiries already, so maybe it is working. And we know each other, so we can always throw each others names in if something appropriate comes up for the other person. :)

I agree. I have joined a few other B-School groups and I think that’s where better connections will be made. I’m commenting every so often and I have realized that I am starting to recognize names. So I think just taking a few short breaks throughout the day to leave feedback will help in terms of your name looking familiar.

Wow, inquiries already?! That is awesome! I added my name to the web designer/dev file on Friday, and I was surprised at how few names were there. Hopefully the inquiries will start rolling in for me (and keep rolling in for you)! I’ll be sure to mention you whenever I can!

Man I’m already starting to regret my decision not to do it this year. But I really wanted to do it for the community and it sounds like it might be too big for it’s own good no?

    • says

I’m a bit the same Marianne, I’ve been more interested in B School for a community of likeminded people rather than the content. I wonder how many others also do this?

    • says

Yeah, it might be! I’m a little worried about that. Though the subgroups seem helpful and seem to stay on topic fairly well. I’ll have to see how things go throughout B-School!

      • says

Vanessa, I think that the community is probably what you make it. Like Erin said, there are lots of subgroups which is cool. I think I’ll probably end up doing it next year. I really wanted to this year, but maybe the timing wasn’t just right this time :)

Erin, so great to meet you today!!

The B-School FB group drives me CRAZY. But I worry I’ll miss something cool if I leave (which I often think of doing). I wish there was better moderation but I’m not sure what the standards would be… I guess I want the group to be pertinent to B-School itself (ie discussing the content, questions, etc) instead of just plugs for peoples’ own businesses/posts basically requesting compliments. Even now I logged on to check and the first thing on my FB feed is somebody requesting likes for their youtube video. Argh.

    • says

Yeah, I unfollowed the group, so I have to actually go to it to see posts instead of getting them in my feed–I couldn’t deal with it. And yes, I thought it would be more on the topic of business as well! I’ve seen such random topics and shameless plugs–there are daily promotion threads use them!!! I know I’m an organizational freak, but I really was expecting something different. I at least thought everything would be related to running a business–not just off the wall topics you should be asking actual friends or family.
And I want to punch everyone who comments on a topic to say “following” so they get updated–just click the “follow” button on the post! It’s been brought up at least 5 times in the group so far and people are still doing it so we’re still getting hundreds of notifications from people who aren’t adding to conversations but who just don’t know how to follow a post without commenting on it. >:(

I’m a B-school newbie this year and I’m so stoked! The Facebook group is definitely a love/ overwhelm relationship.. haha! One of my core desired feelings is connection, so I absolutely LOVE that aspect… but I find myself wanting to check it a million times which kinda defeats the purpose of creating that laser-focus that I’m going for.

And also, B-school brought me to you! Yay for that ;)

I’m new to BSchool this year and YES the FB group is mental!! It’s nice to get a response from questions you post but you can waste SOOOOOO much time in there!! I’ve had some really amazing tools pop up in there but I’ve already had to limit my time in there to 1 hour max!

I’m in a few subgroups (one for my industry (weddings) and one for my location (UK-South Wales) which have really proven helpful, and it’s great to be with people on the same page (and drive as you)!
Now it’s website week and I’m looking at switching my whole system over to wordpress (which I know freaking nothing about)! So looking for help and volia YOU! :)

    • says

Yeah! I’ve gotten so sucked in even though I’m trying not to! I look up and wonder where the day went!
The subgroups are definitely more useful!

Woohoo! Awesome! Feel free to drop me a line! I have spaces reserved for B-Schoolers only! :D
